Although the Mid-Atlantic state of Maryland is small in size, it is the fifth most densely populated state in the United States. Annapolis may be the capital, but Baltimore is the most populated city in the state. Maryland is also the wealthiest state in the nation due to its median household income. Thanks to the states location, Maryland is a major business hub for the nation. Transportation is a big business due to the state’s rail system, easy trucking access, and the Port of Baltimore. Raw materials are the major imported items into the state. Also, being so close to Washington D.C., government, aerospace and defense, bioresearch, and medical facilities and research are all major industries in the state. The western portion of the state is very agricultural, and the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean provide blue crab, fish, and other seafood, thus making Maryland a large producer in food.
